HP Color LaserJet 1600 Printer Review

The HP Color LaserJet 1600 is an entry-level printer, perfect for a home office. The HP Color LaserJet 1600 provides high-quality color and monochrome prints on both legal- (8.5 in. x 14 in.) and letter-size (8.5 in. x 11 in.) paper. While the printer is not capable of printing on special paper (photo, card stock, transparencies or irregular sizes),  if you are in search of a simple printer to print copies of presentations or documents for personal use, the HP Color LaserJet 1600 is capable of producing your desired results.

The printer’s paper tray—capable of holding 250 sheets—is not expandable, nor is the 16 MB memory. The HP Color LaserJet is not network ready, as it does not come equipped with an Ethernet, but rather a simple USB connection. It is also only compatible with Windows-based computers (Windows 98, SE, Me, 2000, XP and Server 2003). Another downside is that the printer comes standard with starter cartridges, rather than full-sized toner cartridges; meaning that if you print often, you will need to replace the color cartridges sooner than normal. The lower price of the HP Color LaserJet 1600 may not make a huge difference after you spend additional money on color cartridges, much sooner than you had originally planned. That said, the HP Color LaserJet 1600’s print quality might make up for its shortcomings.

The HP Color LaserJet 1600 comes standard with HP’s PhotoREt 2400 technology that is included in other more advanced HP printers. The HP PhotoREt technology ensures that text-heavy prints are clear and images appear crisp. The printer also uses HP’s ColorSphere toner, which aids in the clarity of images and texts produced through the HP Color LaserJet 1600. Each toner cartridge is capable of producing between 1,800 and 2,500 sheets before a replacement is required.

If you are in search for a printer that can handle large print jobs, produce a wide variety of print jobs or produce professional-quality prints, the HP Color LaserJet 1600 will not meet your needs. However, the printer’s relatively low price compared to other color laser printers, coupled with high-resolution text and images, make it a feasible solution for the home or single office within a larger operation.

The Affordable, Reliable HP LaserJet P1006 Laser Printer

HP LaserJet P1006 Printer Review

The HP LaserJet P1006 monochrome printer is compact and fairly inexpensive. This workgroup printer is a great option for small offices or smaller groups within a larger operation. Measuring 14 inches high, 9 inches wide, 8 inches deep and weighing only 10.3 pounds, the HP LaserJet P1006 is both smaller and lighter than most ink jet printers.

While the printer is equipped to handle high volume document printing, the HP LaserJet P1006 does not support two-sided printing. However, the HP LaserJet P1006 is equipped with HP FastRes 1200 image enhancement technology and provides quality text printing and clear black-and-white images relatively quickly—producing 16 pages per minute with 9 seconds print out time for the first page to begin to print. The printer produces images that are of high enough quality for personal and internal office use, such as PowerPoint presentation notes, however, the quality may not be high enough for marketing materials or items that will be given to clients.

The HP LaserJet P1006 is ideal for typical day-to-day printing needs of small offices or the home, as it supports the standard legal paper size, but is capable of expanding to A4-size paper (8.25 in x 11.7 in). The HP LaserJet P1006 can hold 150 sheets, but is also equipped with a 10-sheet multipurpose tray, which enables you to print on special paper without taking additional time to change the paper in the main tray or feed each page individually.

Given the low price of the HP LaserJet P1006, the low memory of 8 MB is understandable (it cannot be expanded). Additionally, at a cost of 4 cents per page to print, the low price of this printer is not actually as low as you may expect over time. However, the small size of the HP LaserJet P1006 coupled with low purchase cost, quality text and image printing and practical speed make it a wise choice for any small operation—whether it be at home or in the office.

P1006 Printer Supplies

The only printer supplies that you’ll need to worry about when it comes to your LaserJet P1006 printer are toner cartridges. This printer does not require maintenance kits, fuser kits or drum cartridges. The P1006 laser jet printer uses the HP 35A toner cartridge which yields approximately 1,500 pages per cartridge. New OEM cartridges cost between $60 and $80 depending on where you purchase the unit from.

Brother HL 3040 Printer Review

This is a budget range printer aimed at individual users and small organisations who print in colour on an ad-hoc basis. Brother have tried to make this a hard working printer of choice for those departments who need a reliable and economical colour laser printer but do not wish to compromise on print quality. The Brother HL 3040 delivers on all of those fronts and you will receive excellent looking colour and black and white prints. This is one stylish desktop machine and will fit right into any smart office environment.

The usability of this machine is fantastic. Designed with LED technology inside, the printer will be noticeably faster than some of the traditional laser machine competition. Brother HL 3040 PrinterThe Brother 3040 toner bundled with the printer when you buy it, is easy to install. The toner is a drum and toner combination although you can buy the toner independently from the drums thereafter, with Brother HL 3040 toner available in capacities of 1,400 pages for the cyan, magenta and yellow and then 2,200 page yield for the black. Brother are extremely environmentally conscious and report their machines and components are free of any toxic products and have a productive recycling site based in Wales and all toners can be sent there for free.

For the low budget price, there is a lot on offer in terms of functionality. The printer takes very little time to set up onto your network and computer and the installation CD has some useful features on it including booklet printing, header and footer tool, print restriction functionality and poster printing. Both PC and Mac platforms are catered for and the printer can be linked up with USB cabling. The print restriction tool is very handy for those offices who need to keep control of colour printing costs and a designated administrator can decide who to apply this to. There is also another security feature, called secure print which allows information which is extremely confidential to be sent to the printer to print, whilst spooling it inside the machine until the user enters a pin number on the printer panel, to authorise physical printing of the document.

The Brother HL-3040 can handle paper weight ranges up to 163g and can print onto envelopes, labels and recycled paper. The print speeds are the same for both colour and black and white and average around 16 pages per minute. The paper tray is a handy 250 sheets which is larger than your average base printer and with the ability to change the printer to n-up print settings which allows you to place multiple prints on the same page, paper savings can be even greater.

If you are going to push this printer and print large scale graphics, there is an option to take this printer from 32MB to 544MB, which we would definitely recommend.
